Terms

The following terms are defined here according to their use in the game of Baccarat. This is important to note, since many of these words are used differently in other gambling games.

The total amount of money a player bets during a gaming session is known as ACTION.

The Italian word for zero is BACCARAT. It is also the name of a casino game in which little skill is required, and all picture cards and 10s are valued at zero.

Another Italian word for Baccarat is BACCARA.

The Spanish word for banker is BANCO. In the game of Baccarat, the banker (or banco) is the person (either dealer or player) who is handling the shoe. He deals the cards and plays hands. In other variations of Baccarat, the banker finances the action. In some, the casino does. Nevertheless, the dealer is still referred to as the banker.

Banco is the Spanish word for BANKER. (see definition of BANCO).

The total amount of money the player brings to the table for the purpose of betting is called his BANKROLL.

The most prevalent form of Baccarat you’ll find played in N.America is called BANQUE.

The card that is taken off the top of the deck after each shuffle and then put in the discard tray is called the BURN CARD.

In France, Baccarat is called CHEMIN DE FER. The actual definition of the French term itself is “railroad.”

The French term for one round in the game of Baccarat is COUP.

The French term for dealer is CROUPIER. In American Baccarat, the person who acts as croupier doesn’t deal the cards, but rather oversees and controls the game. This is in contrast to the game of Mini Baccarat, where the dealer has many responsibilities, including dealing, collecting losses, paying off wins, and overseeing the game.

To CUT the deck means to divide it in two after shuffling the cards.

After the dealer shuffles the cards, a player will be given a CUT CARD, which is solid-colored and plastic and is used to cut the deck.

To distribute the cards is to DEAL the cards.

The term DEALER is used to mean different things even amongst the different versions of the game of Baccarat. In the American version of Baccarat, for instance, the two casino workers who are stationed at either end of the Baccarat table are called the dealers. But they do not actually deal; it is their job to payout the winning bets and collect from the losers. The person who deals the cards is the player who is acting as the banker. In fact, he is usually also known as the dealer. In Mini Baccarat, as we’ve established above, the croupier is the person who deals the cards.

The tray that holds the played and discarded cards is called the DISCARD TRAY.

The card which is dealt face down is called, logically, the DOWN CARD.

The house advantage, is called its EDGE. It is usually given as a %.

Jacks, Queens, and Kings are called FACE CARDS. In Baccarat, they have zero value.

A bet placed over and over again, without a change in its amount, is called a FLAT BET. You can say a person is flat-betting when he keeps betting the same amount, in every hand.

The cards that are dealt out and played during a round are referred to as a HAND.

Another word for the casino is the HOUSE.

The HOUSE ADVANTAGE is the advantage (or edge). As stated above, this edge is given as a percentage.

An employee of the casino, the LADDERMAN is the one who supervises the Baccarat game from a seat usually situated above the baccarat table.

A natural 9 is called LE GRANDE in French.

In the game of MINI BACCARAT a table the size of a standard casino blackjack table is used.

If either player or banker get a 9 or an 8 within the first 2 cards, this is called a NATURAL.

In order to shift the cards around on the Baccarat table, a tool called a PALETTE is often used.

In the game of Baccarat, the Spanish and Italian term PUNTO can be used to mean either point or player.

Cards are both dealt out of and held in a SHOE, which is a wooden device that can contain up to eight decks at a time. Dealers can easily slide one card out at a time.

Dealers who want to annoy and frustrate card counters will SHUFFLE UP, which means shuffling the cards prematurely.

A tie is the same thing as a STANDOFF. The two words are used interchangeably.

The card which is dealt face up is called, logically, the UPCARD.
